Mercedes-Benz opens new showroom in "Second life"

The way things are going, at end of the year the only car company that won’t have some sort of engagement with “Sitting Life” will be Lada… Well, if you’re a fan of the virtual, no-obvious-goal game, and you want to visit the showroom and take a Benz for a spin go to the Mercedes-Benz “island” in the upmarket South West district (coordinates: 128.128.11). -Continued: Click “Read More…” below to check out the official press release

PRESS RELEASE: Mercedes-Benz Opens Virtual Brand World in Second Life

  • Exclusive live concert with Mixed Tape Stars at the opening on 20 February 2007
  • Background information, pictures and videos available at the special website http://www.mercedes-benz.com/secondlife without registration

The inhabitants of the virtual world “Second Life” are in for a new highlight next week. On 20 February 2007 Mercedes-Benz sets up its own representation in the online world at www.secondlife.com. On the Mercedes-Benz “island” in the upmarket South West district (coordinates: 128.128.11) the Second Life inhabitants can visit the new showroom, and in the future will be able to experience cars on the Mercedes-Benz virtual test track. To mark the opening of its virtual showroom, Mercedes-Benz will host an exclusive live concert featuring artists from the successful Mercedes-Benz Mixed Tape compilation for all its visitors on 20 February 2007 at 10 p.m. (CET).

“Digital communication has been established as a permanent component of the Mercedes-Benz marketing activities. With Second Life we are consequently using a new communication platform to further address our existing and potential customers”, says Dr. Olaf Göttgens, Vice President Brand Communications Mercedes-Benz Passenger Cars. “In Second Life Mercedes-Benz sets new standards, both visually and with regard to the content. At the same time we offer to experience the fascination of the brand and its products in this virtual environment”, continues Mr. Göttgens.

The design of the showroom demonstrates a particularly detailed 3D architecture and reflects the modern Mercedes-Benz architecture of the real world. Among other elements the representation includes an area for vehicle presentations, a stage for events and big screens for interested users to view current product films and TV advertisements. Visitors of the virtual Mercedes-Benz world can also download the 16th compilation of the very popular Mercedes-Benz Mixed Tape music collection for free, prior to its official release on 27 February 2007. In addition, every visitor will be presented with a virtual Formula 1 racing suit and a helmet as a gift.

The accompanying website www.mercedes-benz.com/secondlife provides Internet users with a jump start to Second Life and a guide to the Mercedes-Benz island. The website can be accessed without having to register for Second Life and offers background information about the Mercedes-Benz presence in the online world as well as videos and pictures for downloading. Mercedes-Benz also provides its Second Life visitors with a brief guided tour of the island to ensure better orientation. For an optimum support, a virtual figure, an “avatar”, is available every day during the high usage times to answer the questions of the visitors. During the starting phase of the Mercedes-Benz world in Second Life there will also be a special press avatar available on working days from 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. (CET) for members of the media.

Mazda Hakaze Concept: Drive it at Second Life

Following Pontiac and Scion, Mazda just announced that it too will give the virtual residents the hugely successful online world of “Second Life” a taste of one its cars, ande specifically, the Geneva Show crossover concept, Hakaze. I have to admit that I too gave in to the “Second Life” craze, but after an hour or two I got so bored that I highly doubt I’d give it a “Second Chance”… -Continued: Click “Read More…” to see the official press release and an image gallery

PRESS RELEASE: Cyberspace Version of the Mazda Hakaze Concept Car now at Second Life

Mazda’s latest concept car, Mazda Hakaze, is now available for driving in cyberspace on Nagare Island at Second Life. By launching its latest show car in virtual form, Mazda Motor Europe is responding to the very positive reaction to Mazda’s trilogy of concepts shown around the world last year. Mazda Senku, Kabura and Sassou were so popular, in fact, that people wanted to buy and drive them as soon as possible. With a single concept car, this has never been possible of course, so Mazda Motor Europe has done the next best thing. Mazda Hakaze is now available to the almost 3 million Second Life residents to drive and own.

Experience Mazda Hakaze at Second Life

With the official launch of the cyberspace version of Mazda Hakaze, people from around the globe now have the chance to experience some of the concept’s attributes in virtual reality. After free registration at SecondLife.com and downloading the appropriate software, cyber pilots can teleport to Nagare Island where the Mazda Hakaze will appear on a platform. It duplicates itself and they can then drive the design concept on a challenging test track around the island that includes a difficult jump. If they master this jump, and demonstrate they are competent to drive the car, they get to keep it.

Mazda Introduces Kite-surfing to Second Life

But residents can do more than just drive. The cyber-Hakaze also comes with a virtual kite-surfing board in the back. This can be taken out and used, after downloading some animations, for doing basic moves with the board – basic because Mazda wants the inhabitants of Second Life to use their creative talent and develop additional kite-surfing tricks and share them with the community.Cruising down to the beach, taking out the board and having a go at kite-surfing in cyberspace – a new sport to Second Life – and maybe even inventing a new move or two, all this promises to be a fun way to get to know Mazda’s compact crossover concept with roadster feel.

Kite-board Design Contest

Those Second Life residents, who have mastered the jump at Nagare Island and own a car, are eligible to participate in a design competition with a real, First Life prize to be won. Participants can download a kite-board with nothing on it, then decorate both sides with their own Zoom-Zoom design and send it to Mazda Motor Europe. The contest will last from 16 February to 4 March 2007 and the best designs will be put online at Nagare Island, where visitors can vote for their favourite design. A single winner will then be announced in March and receive a statue of his or her avatar, which will hold a facsimile of the board with the winning design on it.
